May is Mental Health Awareness month, and the Core Four Partnership — a partnership between the city of San Marcos, Hays County, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District and Texas State University — is hosting an event to support the cause. Vibrant Visions will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 9 at the Village of San Marcos, 215 South Reimer Ave. The event will include a mental health careers panel, an art exhibit for youth and young adults, food, drinks and giveaways.

College campuses across the country have been embroiled in protests over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. While many of those protests have escalated to the point that arrests have been made, including multiple times over the last week at protests on the University of Texas campus in Austin, that wasn’t the case this week at Texas State University.

Texas State University anthropology researchers are using grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Justice to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and bone structure.

The 19th Annual “Hats off for Veterans” was a huge success thanks to the 100s that attended enjoying the music, live and silent auction, fellowship, service agency booths and Original Black’s BBQ. Students from Gary Job Corps Security Cadets have assisted with for over 10 years with the traffic, crowd control and assisting with booth setups and take downs. Funds raised by the BBQ and Gala are awarded to veterans for educational assistance, recipient for $1,000 scholarship is US Army Sergeant Kyle Pringle who is currently working on his first higher education degree in Aquatic Biology at San Antonio College. (For a full story on the scholarship, see tomorrow’s Daily Record.) Entertainment was provided by Full on Fiasco and Country Artist Bart Crow. All Occasions Auctioneers provided the active auctioning thanks to Blake Hartman and Scotty Gibbs. Dear Readers, I moved into a new apartment with virtually nothing—no bed, no towels, nothing for cooking, nothing to sit on… I had sevenish suitcases stuffed with clothes, books, photos, costumes, tote bags, hats and office supplies, but I was without anything to actually furnish my apartment.

Humanity is moved by inhumanity. Pain and injustices inflicted on us or others, with cruelty and without cause, will move people to speak out and take actions to stop that harm.

The growth of industrial-scale users of power could strain the Texas power grid, ERCOT’s chief announced last week. The Dallas Morning News reported Pablo Vegas, the agency’s CEO, said bitcoin miners and artificial intelligence data centers going in across the state, as well as industrial growth in the Permian Basin, could create the need for a massive buildup of power transmission lines in the future.
