County honors Job Corps for Youth Appreciation Week

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra and Commissioners Walt Smith, Lon Shell and Michelle Cohen recognized the Gary Job Corps Center with the Proclamation naming DJH Express National Training Academy as a apprenticeship partner offering CDL Training. Youth Appreciation Week, sponsored by the Department of Labor, presents an invaluable opportunity to highlight and support the growth of our young workforce. Judge Becerra said that the need for the training has always been a necessity to move material and service industries especially in the times of the COVID outbreak the trucks continued moving. When a friend of mine told me about a local organization working to bring community radio to San Marcos, I knew I had to get involved. After numerous meetings, several hot summer mornings of rooftop work raising the antenna and a few unexpected government mandated delays, “Into the Gray” debuted on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, as one of the inaugural programs on KZSM.org.

Hail and high winds cause damage across the county

High winds and hail may have knock down trees, but it can't keep down the spirits of those in San Marcos.

It was a typical hot and humid afternoon with clear skies at 7:35 p.m. Thursday when phones across town began buzzing with an emergency alert from the National Weather Service that stated “Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for this area until 8:30 p.m. for destructive baseball size hail. Take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. People and animals outdoors will be severely injured.” Within ten minutes, the violent storm tore through the city. To add to the panic, a Tornado Warning was issued at 8:22 p.m., and residents across town – at least those willing to heed the warning – hunkered down in the innermost room of their homes and awaited an uncertain future.

JUMP IN

Texas State University held its Spring Commencement ceremonies this weekend Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11. Despite powerful thunderstorms Thursday night that uprooted and damaged several trees around campus and in Sewell Park, graduates were still able to partake in the Bobcat tradition of jumping into the San Marcos River after the conferring of their degrees. Congratulations Texas State University graduates of the Class of 2024.

Running and walking are some of the easiest and best activities to participate in for fitness. Almost anybody can do these activities, and one of the best things about giving it a try for the first time is that not much equipment is needed. A good pair of walking or running shoes is about the only equipment to buy if you want to have a comfortable beginning. Later in the program you might try for some exercise clothes that allow comfort in moving without any restrictions in the legs or arms.

Exploring Nature

Few comic strips have had the cultural impact of “Peanuts,” drawn by Charles M. Schulz. Above, “Peanuts” appears in the Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998 edition of the San Marcos Daily Record. Photo by Celeste Cook

Opinions

I am alarmed to learn that the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee is conducting a hearing May 29 to consider eliminating county-wide vote centers. What is the reason? It seems to me that providing individual precinct vote sites would cost more than county-wide centers and more difficult for voters who don’t readily know their precinct number.
