The ceiling for senior quarterback Tyler Jones’ career seemed endless after 2014.

He debuted as a feisty freshman, but Jones’ true coming out party was his sophomore campaign during which he threw for 2,670 yards, 22 touchdowns to just seven interceptions and added 539 yards on the ground. He seemed destined to shatter school records by the time his career wrapped up.

Texas State had only one last play to make.

As senior quarterback Tyler Jones stood on the sidelines donning a hat and headset during his team’s 40-7 loss to Troy inside Bobcat Stadium, head coach Everett Withers’ message was clear – his cards are all-in toward the future.

Seeing as that’s what the 53-year-old coach has preached all season it didn’t come as a surprise, but it was the final pin to drop. Jones had remained the starer despite his offensive personnel shifting around him throughout the season.

College Football: Withers wants growth from Texas State’s Jones despite record-breaking performance

Senior quarterback Tyler Jones threw a career-high five touchdowns and broke Texas State’s school record for passing yards in a single game with 475 against Incarnate Word on Saturday.

But Bobcat head coach Everett Withers had no praise for Jones after the Bobcats’ 48-17 win over the Cardinals.

“There are some things he can do a lot better,” Withers said. “Our offense is predicated on having a dual-threat quarterback. We don’t have one right now.”
