It was a typical hot and humid afternoon with clear skies at 7:35 p.m. Thursday when phones across town began buzzing with an emergency alert from the National Weather Service that stated “Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for this area until 8:30 p.m. for destructive baseball size hail. Take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. People and animals outdoors will be severely injured.” Within ten minutes, the violent storm tore through the city. To add to the panic, a Tornado Warning was issued at 8:22 p.m., and residents across town – at least those willing to heed the warning – hunkered down in the innermost room of their homes and awaited an uncertain future.
Texas State University held its Spring Commencement ceremonies this weekend Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11. Despite powerful thunderstorms Thursday night that uprooted and damaged several trees around campus and in Sewell Park, graduates were still able to partake in the Bobcat tradition of jumping into the San Marcos River after the conferring of their degrees. Congratulations Texas State University graduates of the Class of 2024.
Any local can tell you that grocery shopping seems to take longer than it used to. As has been reported in regional media outlets, residents say that there are just not enough grocery stores for the rapidly growing population in San Marcos. It seems the San Marcos City Council agrees. At the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, the council created an incentive package for grocery stores to entice that type of development.
Texas State University has been named one of the nation’s “Best Colleges” in three categories for 2024 by Abound, an online college guidance system for degree-seeking adults.

In 2012 Texas State made the jump to Football Bowl Subdivision joining the Western Athletic Conference before finding their home in the Sun Belt Conference.
Nils Mauritz-Barboza was the overall winner of the recent Bobcat Prowl 5K, a fund-raising event for scholarships given annually by Texas State’s Retired Faculty and Staff Association. The event drew 60 runners at Country Estates in San Marcos.

Running and walking are some of the easiest and best activities to participate in for fitness. Almost anybody can do these activities, and one of the best things about giving it a try for the first time is that not much equipment is needed. A good pair of walking or running shoes is about the only equipment to buy if you want to have a comfortable beginning. Later in the program you might try for some exercise clothes that allow comfort in moving without any restrictions in the legs or arms.

Dear Readers, Today, as we celebrate Mother's Day, my heart is with the countless mothers like myself who are facing unimaginable challenges within the family court system. I was divorced in 2011, maintaining primary custody of my sons who lived with me for more than 12 years, but for 655 days now, we have suffered through the perils of this system. It began when I sought to pursue higher education outside of my immediate county, a decision that should have been celebrated as a step towards a brighter future for my family. Instead, it became a battleground where my rights as a mother were questioned and ultimately disregarded.

There may be no better way to start Mother’s Day than serving Mom some breakfast in bed. A homemade meal before Mom even gets out of bed can set the right tone for a day that celebrates all mothers have done and continue to do for their children.
I am alarmed to learn that the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee is conducting a hearing May 29 to consider eliminating county-wide vote centers. What is the reason? It seems to me that providing individual precinct vote sites would cost more than county-wide centers and more difficult for voters who don’t readily know their precinct number.
We don’t think much about our carbon footprint when we punch some words into Google. Yet did you know your average monthly Google searches are roughly equal to running a 60-watt light bulb for three hours?
My mother would have been considered eccentric had she been financially wealthy.
