Countdown to Kickoff: Matt Viator tries to fix ailing Louisiana-Monroe football program

Sports Editor

No one would blame Louisiana-Monroe if it wanted to forget that 2015 ever happened.

The contrast between expectations and reality could not have been any more stark.

Todd Berry told the media before the 2015 season that he thought he had his best team ever at ULM. Four months later, he was out of a job. Amid an 1-9 start to Berry's sixth year at the helm, athletic director Brian Wickstrom canned his head football coach on Nov. 14.

Editor's Note: This story was featured online on Nov. 20, 2015, after Texas State beat Louisiana-Monroe last season in San Marcos.

From here on out, Texas State probably won't win games pretty.

Thursday night's 16-3 victory over hapless Louisiana-Monroe in front of 14,003 fans inside Bobcat Stadium on Senior Night had all of the elements of a contest that pitted two foes with a combined record of 3-16 prior to kickoff.

Georgia Southern has been placed on probation for two years and will see a reduction in two football scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year, the NCAA Committee on Infractions announced Thursday.

The program also received a 10 percent reduction in both official visits and football evaluations for the same year and a self-imposed fine of $5,000 or one percent of the athletic budget. Lastly, the Eagles’ football team will be forced to vacate any victories in which the academically ineligible players competed.

Everett Withers and the Texas State football team aren’t the only ones who have seen plenty of turnover in the offseason.

Ty Harrington and the baseball team are in the same boat.

After the departures of eight seniors, many of whom had a big impact on the Bobcats in 2016 (read: Tanner Hill, Lucas Humpal and Pasquale Mazzoccoli), and two juniors who elected to forgo their final seasons in San Marcos and go pro (read: Jonathan Hennigan and Granger Studdard), Harrington’s team will look much different next season.

Paul Goldschmidt is an all-star.
For the fourth consecutive season, the former Texas State Bobcat and current Arizona Diamondback first baseman was named to the National League side.
Unlike the past two seasons where he was voted in as a starter by the fans, Goldschmidt will come off the bench as a reserve during the All-Star Game on July 12 at PETCO Park in San Diego, California. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on FOX.
