San Marcos opened its 7-on-7 league on Wednesday, which will include three weeks of competition with schools from the surrounding area.

The schools competing in this year’s league inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium are San Marcos, Buda Hays, Wimberley, Seguin, Kyle Lehman, Marion, New Braunfels Canyon and Geronimo Navarro.

“It felt pretty good to be out getting some good competition other than (our) offense,” junior safety Therance Soto said. “We’ve just been competing against each other. Felt good to come out here and see some new plays, new faces and new teams.”

The Rattlers opened week one with games against Hays and Marion. Both games came down to the final possession with San Marcos topping the Rebels, 24-18, but falling to the Bulldogs, 39-35.

“We’re off to a good start but we have to just keep things rolling,” Soto said. “We had a couple of ups and downs. We let some of the downs take hold of that second game but we started to come back at the end, just a little bit too late.”

Next Wednesday’s games will feature matchups against Canyon at 6 p.m. and Wimberley at 7 p.m. inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium.

“(Moving forward) we definitely need to get some more turnovers. Turnovers for the offense. From the defensive standpoint, it’s getting lined up faster and getting in the correct spots. As a team, we’re pretty solid. We have a pretty good future to look forward to.”
