Bobcats complete sweep over UTA, secure bye in Sun Belt tournament

Texas State ensured a first round bye in the Sun Belt Tournament after completing a three-game sweep over UT Arlington with an 8-2 win on Saturday. 

The Bobcats closed the regular season with five straight wins against Sun Belt competition and head into the conference tournament as the No. 6 seed with a second place finish in the west division.

Texas State took the lead early in game three of the series with two runs plated in the first and second. Three insurance runs were added in the seventh and one more in the ninth to secure the win and end the regular season at 28-26-1 overall, 16-14 in the Sun Belt.

Seniors Derek Scheible and Mickey Scott, junior Jonathan Ortega and freshman Dalton Shuffield each ended the afternoon with two hits. Senior Luke Sherley and junior Jaylen Hubbard each contributed an RBI triple. Scott and senior Dylan Paul also scored two runs each.

Sophomore pitcher Zachary Leigh (3-3) earned his second straight win with a 5.2 inning outing in which he surrendered one run. Junior Brayden Theriot retired all four Mavericks he saw before freshman Alex Klitsas entered to close out the final two innings. Klitsas gave up one run on three hits in his two-inning performance.

Texas State outhit UTA 11-9 and committed no errors to the Mavericks three. The Bobcats didn’t record an error in the field all series as they build momentum heading into the conference tournament. 

The Sun Belt Tournament will begin on May 22 in Lafayette, Louisiana. The first-round bye puts the Bobcats past the single-elimination round and sets them up to compete against No. 3 seed Troy. First pitch is scheduled for May 23 at 4 p.m.
