Mystic Canyon rezoning shouldn’t happen for environmental reasons

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

The people of San Marcos may not be aware that a housing development of 137 homes is being planned on 56+ acres of environmentally fragile land. The Planning and Zoning Commission tabled the rezoning request on 5/8/18 for 4 weeks.

Mystic Canyon is planned on the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone between Ranch Road 12 (Wonder World Drive) and Old Ranch rRad 12 ( Rt 80) on a plot of land that has never been farmed or grazed. It contains many old trees and abundant wildlife.

There has been no ecological study, no archeological study and no hydrology study. It is very rocky and there were 7 caves that were filled in when an apartment complex (Capstone Cottages) was built. I wonder if the caves were ever explored and if any unique species were present.

This development will affect the neighbors who live below the area with rain runoff and additional traffic on 2 narrow roads that were not built for through traffic.

I recognize the need for more single family housing in this wonderful town, but could it be done on locations that have already had the trees cut down and the land disturbed?

This area was once considered by the city for a park. It would be a wonderful “green” area to preserve the beauty of the area. I hope the rezoning does not happen.
