‘Friends’ support public library

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

The Friends of the Library have been raising funds to support the mission of the San Marcos Public Library for over 50 years. Just this past week, the Spring Booksale was held and the Friends raised $4,950. This is a record amount for our booksale and it couldn’t come at a better time since the Friends have pledged to raise $500,000 to help furnish the library expansion and remodel project. Your donation and support at their fundraisers is much appreciated.

This year, the Friends voted to spend $32,250 on library materials, programs, and furniture. They provide direct support for children’s programs by purchasing books, hiring entertainers, and awarding book bags for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten participants. The 2018 kick-off event – Libraries Rock – will include a rock climbing wall paid for by the Friends. They also pay for GED preparation materials and test scholarships, musical concerts, and items related to local history.

Special thanks to our Friends of the Library Officers: President Laura Pratt, Vice-President Mitzi Gopffarth, Secretary Becca Campa, and Treasurer Powell Hinson.

The library’s mission is to create opportunities for our citizens to explore and expand their interests; to improve their academic, work, and life skills; and to enhance their enjoyment of leisure time through reading and lifelong learning. Thank you Friends for supporting our mission and supporting the San Marcos Public Library.

Sincerely,

Diane Insley
