Two accidents that occurred along southbound Interstate 35 near Kyle early Friday resulted in the death of one man and injuries to others. The crashes also closed down part of the Interstate for several hours including during the morning rush.
Kyle Police said the first occurred just past midnight near the Yarrington Road exit. Chief Jeff Barnett said an 18-wheeler rear-ended a pickup with three people inside. The pickup then hit another 18-wheeler in front of it and caught fire.
Police who happened to be nearby “assisting with lane closures due to construction” rushed to the scene and were able to get two of the truck’s occupants out. San Antonio residents Ivan Trujillo, 24, and Michael Garcia, 42, were taken to area hospitals in what Barnett said was “serious” condition. Pronounced dead at the scene was Nathaniel Boardo, 33, also of San Antonio.
Neither 18-wheeler driver had any injuries, Barnett said.
Then, at about 2:35 a.m. a second multi-vehicle accident occurred near the 213 mile marker. That crash involved four 18-wheelers and a Dodge pickup. The pickup’s driver had to be extricated and was Starflighted to a hospital
All lanes of the Interstate were back open by mid-morning, and the investigation continues.
