After several meetings with a large community turnout for public comments for and against the development at Lindsey Street and North Street, now being called The Mc-Lain, the development is officially approved. The San Marcos City Council approved the conditional use permit — requiring many concessions on the part of the developer, approved an amendment on the preferred scenario map on the west side of the development to High Intensity and approved the zoning change for the west side of the development to Character District-5 and Character District-5D for the east side of the development at the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday.
Texas State University and Austin Community College District have partnered on a new Bats to Cats guaranteed transfer program to provide a clear path to both an associate and bachelor’s degree for students beginning at ACC and completing at TXST.
Gary Job Corps Plastering students are busy at work applying stucco finish to the Student Bank Building. To date, the students have refinished approximately 30 buildings. Over the years Nicho Garcia, the class instructor, teaches students the value of work and satisfaction of a completion of projects. The San Marcos area is a recipient for the many projects over the years including the sign at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, Mosaic Wall at the Lion’s Club Tube Rental, GARY intro at the Main Gate, statue bases for firemen and policemen at San Marcos City Hall, the base for the Chief Placido at San Marcos City Park, San Marcos Iris Garden and the brick on the electronic sign at the San Marcos Activity Center. The Gary crew has also assisted in construction of the San Marcos Outlet Mall, San Marcos Library, San Marcos Activity Center. Tile setting students assisted with the tile work at St. Philips College and Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, the Community Center in Redwood and assisted in construction of Maxwell Fire Department as well as rebuilding Education Building at Burke Center for Youth in Driftwood, just to name a few of the many projects in the Central Texas area.

After watching the Boston Marathon on television and talking with other runners about running a marathon, many runners make a decision to train to run a marathon. The most difficult part of this decision is that most have very little knowledge of what it takes to run 26.2 miles of a marathon. Having trained a number of runners to run a marathon, one of the first things I tell them is that to run a marathon and enjoy it and be successful is that the training time is about 12 to 14 weeks or more.

Shooting a turkey gobbler from a deer blind during deer season is nice, but it's just a sidebar. But the spring gobblers’ season is a light year’s difference. The turkey is on center stage during the spring breeding season. The toms are gobbling trying to lure hens to them and hunters are making the seductive hen yelps to get a gobbler to move toward them .

Cottage Kitchen is back in business! After a highly-attended Grand Opening this month hosted by the Heritage Association, the first sponsored luncheon will be hosted by the Damron Group Realtors on Wednesday, May 1.
The Victorian Texas/Craftsman-style bungalow located on Viola Street has seen over 120 years of San Marcos history. Present owners Tony and Kerry Rash have endeavored to preserve the home’s unique character.

CONNECTING WITH NATURE
Saturday is Earth Day, and the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment will be hosting an event at Spring Lake from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the 11th annual Earth Day San Marcos Festival, and they’re doing it big.There will be music facilitated by Chief and The Doomsday Device. He did the music for the Native Plant Sale, and his selections were amazing. He had me cruising through the Discovery Center with my wagon bopping my head while I picked up plants. But back to Earth Day, this is a family friendly event that is a chance to celebrate the local natural resources and connect with nature. You might also be connecting with some raindrops if you forget your umbrella as there is a 35% chance of rain for that day. Tiny Tails Small Animal Encounters will be on site. There will be a community clothing swap as well as food vendors. There will be free glass bottom boat tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a philosophy dialogue series from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A little birdie told me there will also be chances to do mindfulness activities around the lake to connect with Mother Earth. Happy 4/20 to my local San Martians.

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, reminds us of the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. April is both Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness month. The following article is the fourth article of a five-week series focusing on raising awareness about sexual assault and child abuse. Locally, HCWC served 616 community members that experienced sexual assault or abuse and 899 children that suffered abuse and their protective caregivers.
