Texas State freshman forward Nijal Pearson put together a strong performance against UL Monroe scoring 18 points and recording seven rebounds Monday night.

But after the Bobcats claimed the 63-57 win over the Warhawks, Pearson left for his hometown of Beaumont to attend his grandfather Herman Lartigue’s funeral.

Pearson’s grandfather died last Wednesday, but the freshman forward decided to play Saturday’s game against Louisiana-Lafayette and Monday’s contest against ULM.

Men's College Basketball: Warhawks wear down as Bobcats take advantage

It’s tough enough to play a full 40 minutes of college basketball.

Texas State (11-8, 4-3 in the Sun Belt) has struggled with its own inconsistencies in putting together complete games end-to-end so when you’re a team like UL Monroe (6-14, 0-7 in the Sun Belt), that task is even tougher. The Warhawks are only around seven to eight players deep and the Bobcats knew that if they kept their foot on the pedal, the Warhawks would eventually crack.

Saturday was Taeler Deer’s show.

The junior guard from Houston drove inside the lane, swished 3-pointers, found her open teammates and created turnovers for Texas State en route to a 62-40 win over Louisiana-Lafayette inside Strahan Coliseum.

“I knew it was a big game,” Deer said. “Lafayette is one of the top teams in the conference. So, I knew I had to bring my A-game today. And we’ve been focusing in practice. Focusing on defense ... We played as a team today.”
