SMCISD celebrates school board with reception

On Monday, Jan. 23, there was a reception honoring the San Marcos CISD School Board.

Superintendent Michael Cardona said, “January 2017 is School Board Recognition Month—a time to focus on the crucial role an elected board of trustees plays in our communities and schools. We take this opportunity to show our school board members that we appreciate their dedication and hard work. They are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children.”

Pack 18 celebrates record-breaking popcorn sales

Fourth-grader Francisco “Tres” Rios’ hard work will be recognized next week as he represents Pack 18 at the Report to State Parade for the Boy Scouts of America in Austin Feb. 4. Rios was the top popcorn seller in their district, which includes the Buda, Kyle, Dripping Springs, Wimberley, Driftwood and Plum Creek areas. Rios finished the fundraiser with a total of over $4,500 in sales in only two short months, setting a record for his pack. When asked about his success, Rios had one answer: Location, location, location.

Cat of the Week

Smart, sassy and full of personality, Lilo is a cat who knows what she wants. This three-year-old domestic long hair enjoys being the center of attention, so she’d probably be best as an only cat. But that’s alright because she can focus her affection on you. Lilo loves to hang out and relax, gets along well with people and would be a great match for any adult looking for a true princess.

Dog of the Week

Dewey is such a wonderful guy and so gorgeous. He gets so excited when he sees you that he’ll do a happy dance with his front paws and bark to get your attention. He is so obedient, knows “sit,” “lie down” and doesn’t jump. He sprints around the yard with nonstop excitement, but immediately stops to snuggle. He’ll lean his whole body on you and hold perfectly still while you scratch his ears. Dewey has an amazing coat pattern and soft, intelligent eyes. He would do well as a single dog, and with adults or mature children.

Pets of the Week

Both pets are available for adoption at the San Marcos Regional Shelter, and both pets have their adoption sponsored by the Mutt Strutt Guardian Angel program. That means that if you and either pet are a good match, their adoption, complete with spay or neuter, rabies vaccine, kennel shots, microchip and city license are completely free.  To learn more or to meet our pets, please visit us in person at the shelter, open from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Today’s column will be a little different. Instead of relating what are some of the things happening in the United States and the world, I will address what is happening here in our community.
